Apps for the Home in 2016

Remote home control system on a digital tablet or phone.

Because most of us are never far from our smart phones and tablets, there is an app for just about everything – even for the home. From home monitoring to home improvement, here are five of the best apps for the home in 2016.
1. Alarm.com
Price: Free
Available Devices: Apple, Android, Blackberry, Windows
The Alarm.com app can sync with a wide variety of home security systems, including ADT, Protection One, and Guardian. It gives homeowners the ability to monitor their home from anywhere worldwide. While features may vary based on your individual security system, examples of features include arming and disarming the system, adjusting the thermostat, or checking security cameras.
2. Key Ring
Price: Free
Available Devices: Apple, Android, Blackberry, Windows
If you’re signed up for loyalty programs at your favorite stores, it can be a hassle to dig through your purse or wallet to find the accompanying card – if you remember to bring it at all. Key Ring simplifies the process by letting you organize all your reward program information in one place, eliminating the need to carry around a stack of battered plastic cards or have miniature tags on your keys. Even gym memberships can be put in the app for easy scanning.
3. Yummly
Price: Free
Available Devices: Apple
If grocery shopping and menu planning are a chore, Yummly can make the process easier and more streamlined. Search an enormous database of recipes at once, saving favorites to your digital recipe box. Don’t know what to make with the barbecue sauce that’s on sale this week? The app lets you scan an item’s barcode and search for recipes that use the product as an ingredient. Yummly has also partnered with Instacart for one hour grocery delivery in many major cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Jose.
4. Remember The Milk
Price: Free (Pro membership is $3/month)
Available Devices: Apple, Blackberry, Google
Your “to-do” list will be done easier with Remember The Milk. Tasks can be organized by priority, day, or type (family, home, work, etc.); the GPS feature can also be used to help you finish items based on proximity. Choose to get reminders by email, text message, or even instant messenger; the app can also sync with Google Calendar and Siri.
5. Handyman Calculator
Price: Free
Available Devices: Android
Whether you are a DIY enthusiast or a building professional, Handyman Calculator offers dozens of calculations and conversion tools in one easy to access location. While some of the available calculators are designed for the professionals (such as the Oil Drilling Pressure to Mud Weight Converter), the calculators can help take the guesswork out of planning and shopping for home improvement projects. From drywall to tiling, Handyman Calculator can make your home improvements easier.
