Staycation ideas for the family

The Covid-19 crisis has led to many families cancelling their spring and summer travel plans. While our couches may not be able to compete with a beach-front cabana, there are still plenty of ways to have fun at home!

Although a staycation, or a vacation that takes place entirely at home, might not be your first choice for travel, it can still be a fun, relaxing, and revitalizing experience! These staycation ideas can help you recharge and get ready to dive back into the day-to-day grind.

Successful staycation tips

A little effort can make all the difference when planning a staycation! The following small hacks can help your family enjoy a successful one:

1.       Change the scenery

Most of us have been in our homes for several months; even if you can’t actually travel, you can change the scenery for your staycation! Rearrange the living room furniture, organize the bedroom like it’s an AirBnB, or order fun-themed décor from Amazon to help transform your living space.

2.       Eat like you’re on vacation

A staycation is not the time for boring sandwiches or sensible salads! Don’t be afraid to splurge on Postmates or UberEats from your favorite restaurants. Cooking from home? Plan your meals around what you would’ve been eating on vacation. Even if you can’t fly to Paris, you can still enjoy an Instagrammable charcuterie board.

3.       Plan an itinerary

To avoid spending the day on the couch rewatching “Friends” or “The Office,” plan an itinerary of activities and events for your staycation. This can include fancy meals, taking an online class, taking time to practice yoga, or even a long soak in the tub.

Our favorite staycation ideas

1.       Hawaiian luau

Pack a swimsuit and say “Aloha!” to a Hawaiian luau. Give each family member a lei upon arrival, relax at the “pool” or “beach” by repurposing a sandbox or old kiddie pool, and learn to do the hula with YouTube. Snack on fresh fruits like pineapple before lighting up the tiki torches and grilling up pork chops, salmon, or even beef teriyaki. End the day with your favorite Hawaiian themed movies or shows, such as Lilo and Stitch or Magnum PI.

2.       Spa retreat

Set the scene for your spa retreat by lighting candles, turning on soft music, or diffusing your favorite essential oil scent. Make your own cucumber water – don’t forget to save a few slices for your eyes! – and order in a meal from your favorite healthy restaurant. Plan to pamper each other with treatments such as facials, hair masks, manicures, and sugar scrubs. Most treatments can be made from ingredients most of us already have around the house such as honey, brown sugar, yogurt, avocado, and more. Don’t forget a long, quiet soak in the tub to end the day! 

3.       Olympic games

The 2020 Olympic games may have been postponed, but your family can host their own version of the games at home! Start by dividing into teams; have each group name their country, create a mascot, and even design a flag! After the parade for the opening ceremonies, compete in events such as paper airplane folding and throwing, basketball, obstacle course, simple gymnastics, and more! Don’t forget the medals; kids can help craft metals from tin foil, cardboard, clay, or foam.
